What allergy care at a primary care clinic includes
Allergies are an immune reaction to something that is harmless to most people: pollen, dust mites, mold, pet dander, insect stings or certain foods. In Fort Bend County, tree, grass and ragweed pollen keep many people symptomatic for most of the year.
Your provider starts with your history and an exam, then decides whether testing will change the plan. Treatment usually combines avoiding triggers, the right non-drowsy antihistamine or nasal spray, and, for some patients, a referral for immunotherapy. If allergies are triggering asthma, we treat both together.
- Review of symptoms, timing and likely triggers
- Allergy testing when results will change treatment
- Prescription and over-the-counter medication plans
- Asthma and allergy-related cough or wheeze managed in the same visit

Allergy problems we see most
From spring pollen to year-round dust and pet allergies, the plan is built around your triggers and your symptoms.
Seasonal allergies (hay fever)
Sneezing, runny or stuffy nose and itchy, watery eyes during tree, grass and ragweed seasons.
Pollen allergies →Indoor & environmental allergies
Dust mites, mold and pet dander that cause symptoms all year, especially at night and in the morning.
Winter allergies →Allergy-related asthma
Cough, wheeze or chest tightness that flares with allergens, managed with inhalers and a written plan.
Asthma & COPD care →Hives & skin reactions
Itchy welts or rashes after exposures, foods or medicines, with treatment and trigger review.
Rash & skin care →Food allergy concerns
Evaluation of reactions to foods, guidance on avoidance and when an allergist referral is needed.
Common food allergies →Allergy testing
Testing to pinpoint triggers when it will change your treatment, with results explained in plain language.
Allergy testing in Texas →How an allergy visit works
Most allergy visits follow four steps.
Tell us your pattern
When symptoms start, what makes them worse, what you have tried and whether anyone at home has similar symptoms.
Exam
Your provider checks your nose, throat, eyes, skin and lungs, and reviews any asthma symptoms.
Test if it helps
Allergy testing is ordered only when it will change the plan. Some allergy medicines must be stopped before testing, so ask when you call.
Treatment plan
Trigger control, the right medicines, an asthma plan if needed, and a follow-up date to check progress.
Allergies, a cold or COVID-19?
The symptoms overlap, but a few clues usually separate them. Testing settles it when it matters.
| Allergies | Common cold | COVID-19 or flu | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical onset | Right after exposure; same time every year | Gradual over a day or two | Sudden, often with fever and body aches |
| Itchy eyes, sneezing | Common | Sometimes | Uncommon |
| Fever | No | Rare, low | Common |
| How long | Weeks, as long as exposure continues | 7–10 days | Days to 2 weeks |

Living well with allergies in Sugar Land
Houston-area allergy seasons run long: tree pollen from late winter, grasses through spring and summer, and ragweed and mold into the fall. Indoor allergens add symptoms year-round. The goal of treatment is simple: fewer symptoms, better sleep and no missed work, with the least medicine that gets you there.
Trigger control that works
- Keep windows closed on high-pollen days and shower after time outside
- Use a HEPA filter in the bedroom and wash bedding weekly in hot water
- Keep pets out of the bedroom if dander is a trigger
- Run the air conditioner and fix leaks to limit indoor mold

Medicines and when to use them
Second-generation antihistamines (such as cetirizine, loratadine or fexofenadine) control sneezing and itching without much drowsiness. Steroid nasal sprays are the most effective treatment for congestion but work best when used daily during the season. Decongestant pills can raise blood pressure, so ask before using them if you have hypertension. Your provider will match the plan to your symptoms and other conditions.
When to call before you come
Walk-ins are welcome, but a quick call to (281) 617-8671 helps in a few cases:
- Allergy testing: antihistamines usually need to be stopped for several days before skin testing
- Wheezing or shortness of breath, so we can prioritize you or direct you to the ER if needed
- A reaction with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat: call 911 instead
Insurance and cost
Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. What you pay for allergy visits and testing depends on your plan’s copay and deductible, and on whether tests are ordered. See insurance accepted or call (281) 617-8671 to verify your coverage before your visit.

Allergy questions we hear most
Quick answers about allergy care at our Sugar Land clinic.
Still have questions?
Our front desk can answer questions about visits and confirm your insurance before you come in.
Call (281) 617-8671Do you do allergy testing?
Yes. Allergy testing can be ordered when results will change your treatment. Some allergy medicines must be stopped for several days before testing, so call before you come and we will tell you what to do.
Can allergies be cured?
Allergies cannot be cured, but most people get very good control with trigger avoidance and the right medicines. Immunotherapy (allergy shots or tablets) can reduce sensitivity over time for some patients; we refer to an allergist when that is the right next step.
Can I walk in for allergy symptoms?
Yes. Walk-ins are welcome Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. If you want testing, call first so you can stop antihistamines in advance.
Which allergy medicine is best?
It depends on your main symptom. Nasal steroid sprays work best for congestion, antihistamines for sneezing and itching, and eye drops for itchy eyes. Your provider will build a plan around your symptoms and any other conditions, such as high blood pressure.
Do you treat asthma with allergies?
Yes. Allergy-triggered cough, wheeze and chest tightness are managed in the same visit, with inhalers, a written plan and follow-up.
What insurance do you accept?
Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. Coverage depends on your specific plan and network, so call (281) 617-8671 with your card ready and the front desk will confirm your benefits before your visit.
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes. Voss Family Clinic is accepting new adult patients for primary care. Your first visit can be a walk-in, a scheduled appointment or a sick visit, and the same team continues your care afterward.
Do you offer care in Spanish?
Yes. Dr. Humera Naqvi speaks Spanish, and the appointment, contact, new-patient and insurance pages are available in Spanish. Call the office if you need help in Spanish choosing the right type of visit.
