What preventive care is

Preventive care means finding and lowering risks before they become disease. For adults, that comes down to a short list that pays off for decades: controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar; screening for cancers that are treatable when found early; staying current on vaccines; and building habits around food, movement, sleep and tobacco.

A preventive visit at Voss Family Clinic reviews each of these for your age, sex, family history and lifestyle, then sets a plan. Most of it is covered as preventive care by insurance, and the follow-up happens with the same team that knows you.

  • Blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes screening
  • Cancer screening referrals: colorectal, breast, cervical, lung (for eligible smokers) and prostate discussion
  • Adult vaccines, including flu, COVID-19, pneumococcal, shingles, Tdap and hepatitis
  • Counseling on weight, nutrition, activity, sleep, alcohol and tobacco

02

Exam and labs

Vital signs and an exam, with blood tests such as cholesterol and A1C when due.

03

Screenings and vaccines

04

Your plan

One or two lifestyle changes to work on, medicines if risks are high, and a follow-up date.

Adult screenings and vaccines at a glance

Recommendations change with age and risk, and your provider will tailor them. This overview reflects widely used guidance for adults; it is not a substitute for your own plan.

Screenings most adults need

  • Blood pressure: at least every year
  • Cholesterol: periodically from the 20s to 30s, more often with risk factors
  • Diabetes: adults 35 to 70 who are overweight, and others with risk factors
  • Colorectal cancer: from age 45 by colonoscopy or stool-based test
  • Breast cancer: mammograms for women from age 40
  • Cervical cancer: Pap and/or HPV testing for women 21 to 65
  • Lung cancer: yearly low-dose CT for adults 50 to 80 with a heavy smoking history
Healthy adult lifestyle and preventive care

Vaccines for adults

  • Flu every season and COVID-19 as currently recommended
  • Tdap once, then tetanus booster every 10 years
  • Shingles vaccine from age 50
  • Pneumococcal vaccine from age 50, or earlier with certain conditions
  • Hepatitis B for unvaccinated adults, and others based on risk

Habits that prevent the most disease

Not smoking, keeping blood pressure in range, moving most days, limiting alcohol and keeping a healthy weight prevent more heart attacks, strokes and cancers than any test. Your preventive visit is where those goals get specific, with follow-up planned and support from our medical weight loss program when weight is a health concern.

Insurance and cost

Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. What you pay for preventive visits (many plans cover them in full) depends on your plan’s copay and deductible, and on whether tests are ordered. See insurance accepted or call (281) 617-8671 to verify your coverage before your visit.

Preventive care questions we hear most

Quick answers about prevention at our Sugar Land clinic.

Still have questions?

Our front desk can answer questions about visits and confirm your insurance before you come in.

Call (281) 617-8671

Is a preventive visit the same as an annual physical?

They overlap. An annual physical is the exam itself; preventive care is the broader set of screenings, vaccines and counseling. At Voss Family Clinic they are usually done in the same yearly visit.

Do you give vaccines?

Yes. Flu, COVID-19, Tdap, shingles, pneumococcal and hepatitis vaccines are available or can be arranged. Ask which are due for you at your visit.

Is preventive care free with insurance?

Many plans cover recommended preventive services in full when you see an in-network provider. If a new problem is treated during the same visit, that part may carry a copay. Call to verify your benefits.

When should I start colon cancer screening?

At age 45 for adults at average risk, earlier with a family history. Options include colonoscopy or stool-based tests; your provider will help you choose and refer you.

What if I have not seen a doctor in years?

Start with a preventive visit. We will catch up on screenings and vaccines over one or two visits and set a plan you can keep.

What insurance do you accept?

Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. Coverage depends on your specific plan and network, so call (281) 617-8671 with your card ready and the front desk will confirm your benefits before your visit.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Walk-ins are welcome Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. You can also request an appointment online or call (281) 617-8671; calling ahead lets you ask about the current wait.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes. Voss Family Clinic is accepting new adult patients for primary care. Your first visit can be a walk-in, a scheduled appointment or a sick visit, and the same team continues your care afterward.
