What a neurological exam is

A neurological exam is a hands-on check of how well your brain, spinal cord and nerves are working. Your provider tests your mental status, cranial nerves (vision, eye movement, face and swallowing), strength, reflexes, sensation, coordination and walking. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes and needs no special equipment.

The exam helps separate problems that can be managed in primary care, such as tension headaches, migraine, vitamin deficiencies or a pinched nerve, from those that need a neurologist or urgent imaging. If a specialist is needed, we refer you and share the findings so your first specialist visit is productive.

  • Mental status, speech and memory screening
  • Cranial nerve, strength, reflex and sensation testing
  • Coordination, balance and gait assessment
  • Blood tests such as B12, thyroid and blood sugar when symptoms suggest them

Neurological exams explained

Why a primary care neurological exam is a good first step

Many neurological symptoms have causes that primary care can find and treat: low B12, an underactive thyroid, poorly controlled diabetes, medication side effects, anxiety, dehydration or a pinched nerve from the neck or back. Starting here means faster answers, and a clear referral when a neurologist is needed.

What we do in the office

  • Full neurological exam and vital signs, including blood pressure lying and standing when dizziness is the complaint
  • Blood tests such as B12, thyroid, blood sugar and electrolytes
  • Medication review, since many drugs cause dizziness, tremor or confusion
  • Referral for MRI, CT, EEG, EMG or nerve studies when the exam calls for them
Headache and dizziness evaluation

What needs the emergency room, not an office visit

  • Sudden weakness or numbness on one side, face drooping or slurred speech (possible stroke): call 911
  • The worst headache of your life, or a headache with fever and stiff neck
  • A seizure, fainting with injury, or confusion that came on suddenly
  • A head injury with vomiting, drowsiness or worsening headache

Insurance and cost

Still have questions?

Our front desk can answer questions about visits and confirm your insurance before you come in.

Call (281) 617-8671

Do you have a neurologist on staff?

No. Voss Family Clinic is a primary care practice. Our internal medicine physician and nurse practitioner perform the neurological exam, treat common causes and refer you to a neurologist when specialist care, EEG, EMG or nerve conduction studies are needed.

Does a neurological exam hurt?

No. The exam uses a reflex hammer, light, tuning fork and simple tasks such as walking and touching your nose. Nothing is painful.

Will I need an MRI or CT scan?

Only when the exam or your symptoms call for it. Many symptoms are evaluated with the exam and blood tests first.

Can you treat migraines?

Yes. Migraine and tension headaches are managed in primary care with trigger review, acute medicines and preventive treatment when attacks are frequent.

What causes numbness and tingling?

Common causes include diabetes, low vitamin B12, thyroid problems, a pinched nerve, carpal tunnel syndrome and some medicines. The exam and blood tests narrow it down.

What insurance do you accept?

Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. Coverage depends on your specific plan and network, so call (281) 617-8671 with your card ready and the front desk will confirm your benefits before your visit.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Walk-ins are welcome Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. You can also request an appointment online or call (281) 617-8671; calling ahead lets you ask about the current wait.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes. Voss Family Clinic is accepting new adult patients for primary care. Your first visit can be a walk-in, a scheduled appointment or a sick visit, and the same team continues your care afterward.
