Lab tests with a provider who explains them
A lab result is only useful when someone tells you what it means for you. At Voss Family Clinic, tests are ordered by your primary care provider for a reason, collected at the clinic, and reviewed with you: what is normal, what needs watching and what needs treatment.
Common reasons for lab work include an annual physical, monitoring a chronic condition such as diabetes or thyroid disease, checking a new symptom such as fatigue, and confidential STD screening.
- Blood draw and urine collection at the clinic
- Fasting instructions given when you schedule
- Results reviewed by your provider, with a follow-up plan
- Abnormal results explained, not just reported

At a visit, or by phone for established patients when a routine test is due.
Prepare
Some tests need 8 to 12 hours of fasting; water and most usual medicines are fine. We tell you when you schedule.
Collection
Blood is drawn and urine collected at the clinic during office hours.
Results and plan
Your provider reviews the results and contacts you, or discusses them at your follow-up, with clear next steps.
Which tests need fasting?
Fasting means no food or drinks other than water for 8 to 12 hours before the draw.
| Usually fasting | Fasting sometimes | No fasting needed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tests | Fasting glucose; lipid panel when your provider asks for it | Metabolic panel when checked with glucose | A1C, thyroid (TSH), blood count, most STD tests, urinalysis |
| Best time | First thing in the morning | Morning when fasting | Any time during office hours |
| Medicines | Take usual medicines with water unless told otherwise | Same | Same |

Understanding your results
Every result comes with a reference range, but a value just outside the range is not always a problem, and a value inside the range is not always reassuring. Trends over time, your symptoms and your other conditions matter as much as a single number. That is why your provider, not a printout, interprets your labs.
Results your provider will always discuss
- A1C of 5.7% or higher (prediabetes) or 6.5% or higher (diabetes)
- LDL cholesterol high for your risk level
- Abnormal kidney or liver function
- Abnormal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Any positive infection screening

Screening tests by age
Adults are generally screened for high cholesterol and diabetes risk starting in their 30s and 40s, earlier with risk factors such as family history, high blood pressure or weight. Your annual physical is the natural time to keep screening on schedule; your provider follows U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations and adjusts them to you.
Insurance and cost
Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. What you pay for lab testing depends on your plan’s copay and deductible, and on whether tests are ordered. See insurance accepted or call (281) 617-8671 to verify your coverage before your visit.

Only for certain tests, such as fasting glucose and some cholesterol panels. We tell you when you schedule. Water and your usual medicines are generally fine unless your provider says otherwise.
