What is an annual physical exam?
An annual physical is a yearly preventive checkup with your primary care provider. It is a chance to check your health when you feel well, catch silent problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or prediabetes early, and keep screenings and vaccines up to date.
At Voss Family Clinic, your physical is also the time to talk about anything on your mind, from sleep and stress to weight and energy. Your provider uses what they learn to build a plan for the year ahead, and the same team follows up on it.
- Vital signs: blood pressure, heart rate, weight and BMI
- Head-to-toe physical exam
- Lab work such as cholesterol and blood sugar when due
- Screening and vaccine review for your age and sex

Getting the most from your yearly physical
Many serious conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes and some cancers, cause no symptoms for years. A yearly physical gives your provider a regular look at your health, so changes are spotted early and your screenings stay on schedule.
How to prepare for your physical
- Ask whether to fast; some cholesterol and glucose tests need 8 to 12 hours without food
- Bring your medicine bottles or a full list, including vitamins and supplements
- Bring your insurance card, a photo ID and any forms that need completing
- Write down symptoms, questions and changes since your last visit
- Know your family history of heart disease, diabetes and cancer if you can

Common lab tests at a physical
- Lipid panel: cholesterol and triglycerides
- Glucose or A1C: blood sugar and diabetes risk
- Metabolic panel: kidney function, liver function and electrolytes
- Complete blood count: red cells, white cells and platelets
- Other tests, such as thyroid or vitamin levels, when your provider recommends them
Physicals for men and women
Recommended screenings differ by age and sex. Women may also want a well-woman exam for breast and cervical cancer screening and reproductive health. Men may discuss prostate health or low testosterone. Everyone benefits from blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and colorectal cancer screening on schedule.
Insurance and cost
Many health plans cover one preventive physical a year with no copay when you see an in-network provider. Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. Medicare does not cover a routine physical but does cover the Annual Wellness Visit. If a new problem is treated during your physical, that part may be billed separately. Call (281) 617-8671 to verify your coverage.
