What a UTI visit involves
A urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection of the bladder or, less often, the kidneys. Classic symptoms are burning with urination, needing to go often and urgently, cloudy or strong-smelling urine and discomfort low in the belly. Fever, back pain, chills or vomiting suggest the kidneys may be involved and need prompt care.
At Voss Family Clinic, a urine test during the visit confirms the infection; a culture may be sent to identify the bacteria and the right antibiotic, especially for recurrent infections. Treatment usually starts the same day.
- Urinalysis during the visit, with culture when needed
- Antibiotics chosen for your history and local resistance patterns
- Evaluation of recurrent UTIs and prevention counseling
- STD testing when symptoms could have another cause

UTI: our clinic, urgent care or the ER?
Most UTIs are handled in primary care the same day. Some signs mean the ER.
| Our clinic | Urgent care | Emergency room | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Typical bladder symptoms; recurrent UTIs; follow-up | Same symptoms after hours or on weekends | High fever with shaking chills, vomiting that prevents fluids, severe flank pain, confusion in older adults |
| Testing | Urinalysis in the visit, culture when needed | Urinalysis | Blood and urine tests, imaging if needed |
| Follow-up | Same team reviews culture results and prevention | Usually refers back to primary care | Hospital follow-up |

Treating this infection and preventing the next
Bladder infections usually clear within a few days of the right antibiotic. Finishing the full course matters, even when you feel better after a day. Drinking water, avoiding bladder irritants such as caffeine and alcohol for a few days, and an over-the-counter urinary pain reliever can ease symptoms while the antibiotic works.
Preventing recurrent UTIs
- Drink enough water through the day and do not hold urine for long periods
- Urinate after sexual activity
- Wipe front to back
- Avoid douches and scented products in the genital area
- Ask about vaginal estrogen if you are past menopause and have repeated infections
- Ask about a prevention plan if you have three or more UTIs a year

When symptoms are not a UTI
Burning or urgency with a negative urine test can come from vaginal infections, sexually transmitted infections, bladder irritation, kidney stones or, in men, prostate problems. Your provider will test for these when the story does not fit a simple UTI.

UTI questions we hear most
Quick answers about UTI care at our Sugar Land clinic.
Still have questions?
Our front desk can answer questions about visits and confirm your insurance before you come in.
Call (281) 617-8671Can I walk in for a UTI?
Yes. Walk in Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. A urine test is done during the visit and treatment usually starts the same day.
Do I always need antibiotics?
A confirmed bacterial UTI is treated with antibiotics. If the urine test is negative, your provider looks for another cause rather than prescribing antibiotics you do not need.
How soon will I feel better?
Most people improve within 1 to 2 days of starting the right antibiotic. Call if you are not improving after 2 to 3 days, or sooner with fever or back pain.
Why do I keep getting UTIs?
Common contributors include sexual activity, menopause-related changes, incomplete bladder emptying, diabetes and some anatomy or hygiene factors. A recurrent-UTI evaluation looks at these and builds a prevention plan.
Can men get UTIs?
Yes, though less often. UTIs in men may involve the prostate and are evaluated more thoroughly, sometimes with a longer antibiotic course.
Can a UTI be treated by telehealth?
For established patients with typical, uncomplicated symptoms, a telehealth visit may be possible. A urine test in the office is preferred, especially for first or recurrent infections.
What insurance do you accept?
Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. Coverage depends on your specific plan and network, so call (281) 617-8671 with your card ready and the front desk will confirm your benefits before your visit.
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes. Voss Family Clinic is accepting new adult patients for primary care. Your first visit can be a walk-in, a scheduled appointment or a sick visit, and the same team continues your care afterward.
