An annual physical is a preventive checkup, not a sick visit. Your clinician reviews your health history, checks vital signs, does a physical exam, updates vaccines and screenings, and may order routine blood work. It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
What happens during an annual physical?
- Health history review: medications, allergies, family history, lifestyle, sleep, mood and any changes since your last visit.
- Vital signs: blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight and BMI.
- Physical exam: heart, lungs, abdomen, skin, and other areas based on your age and history.
- Screenings: recommended tests for your age and risk, such as cholesterol, diabetes, and cancer screenings.
- Vaccines: flu, tetanus, and others you may be due for.
- Plan: results follow-up, referrals if needed, and goals for the year ahead.
Common screenings by age (adults)
| Screening | Who is generally recommended |
|---|---|
| Blood pressure | All adults |
| Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes | Adults 35 to 70 with overweight or obesity |
| Cholesterol / heart risk | Adults 40 to 75, and earlier with risk factors |
| Colorectal cancer | Adults 45 to 75 |
| Cervical cancer | Women 21 to 65 |
| Breast cancer (mammogram) | Women 40 to 74, every two years |
| Lung cancer (low-dose CT) | Adults 50 to 80 with a significant smoking history |
| Depression and anxiety | Adults, at regular visits |
Your clinician may recommend different timing based on your personal and family history.
How to prepare
- Bring a list of all medications and supplements, with doses.
- Bring your insurance card and photo ID.
- Bring vaccine records and results from other doctors if you have them.
- Write down questions or symptoms you want to discuss.
- Ask whether you should fast before blood work; some tests require it.
Physical vs. sick visit: why it matters
A preventive physical focuses on screening and prevention. If you also want a new problem evaluated during the same visit, that part may be billed as a separate service under your insurance. Let the front desk know when you book.
Is a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit the same as a physical?
No. The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit focuses on a personalized prevention plan and health risk assessment and does not include a full head-to-toe exam. Ask our office which visit type fits your coverage.
