COVID-19 testing with a provider visit

A test tells you whether the virus is present. A visit tells you what to do about it. At Voss Family Clinic, COVID-19 testing is part of a sick visit: your provider checks your symptoms and oxygen level, decides whether a rapid antigen test, a PCR test or a flu and strep test is the right one, and talks through treatment, isolation and when to seek emergency care.

Rapid antigen results are available during the visit. PCR tests are sent to a laboratory and usually take a few days. For higher-risk adults, early antiviral treatment can reduce the chance of severe illness, so do not wait to be seen.

  • Rapid antigen testing with results during the visit
  • PCR testing sent to a laboratory when recommended
  • Flu and strep testing at the same visit when symptoms overlap
  • Treatment and isolation guidance based on current public health recommendations

When to test

Reasons to get tested

Testing is most useful when the result will change what you do next.

Symptoms

Fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, body aches, fatigue or loss of taste or smell.

Fever, flu & COVID care →

Known exposure

Close contact with someone who tested positive, especially if you are at higher risk.

Higher-risk adults

Age 65 and older, or conditions such as diabetes, lung disease or heart disease, where early treatment matters.

Chronic disease care →

Work or travel requirements

Documentation of a negative test when an employer or destination requires it.

Lingering cough or shortness of breath

Symptoms that persist after an illness deserve an exam, not just another test.

Cough & sinus treatment →

Flu or strep instead?

When symptoms overlap, we can test for flu and strep throat at the same visit.

How a COVID-19 testing visit works

Four steps, with the result explained before you leave.

01

Call ahead if you can

Call (281) 617-8671 so the front desk can seat you away from other patients. Walk-ins are still welcome.

02

Check in

Show your photo ID and insurance card and describe your symptoms and any exposure.

03

Evaluation and test

A provider checks your temperature, oxygen level and lungs, then performs the test that fits your situation.

04

Results and plan

Rapid results are explained during the visit; PCR results are sent to you. You leave with treatment, isolation and return-to-work guidance.

Which test?

Rapid antigen test or PCR test?

Both are useful; they answer slightly different questions.

What to do after your test

If your test is positive, rest, fluids and fever control are the basics. Adults at higher risk of severe illness may be offered antiviral treatment, which works best when started within the first days of symptoms. Stay home while you have fever and your symptoms are improving, and follow the current public health guidance your provider gives you.

Seek emergency care for

  • Trouble breathing or shortness of breath at rest
  • Chest pain or pressure that does not go away
  • Confusion, inability to stay awake, or bluish lips or face
  • Oxygen level below the number your provider gave you

Preventing the next illness

Vaccination for COVID-19 and flu is recommended for most adults each season; ask about current recommendations at your visit. Washing hands, staying home when sick and improving ventilation reduce spread at home and at work.

Insurance and cost

Voss Family Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, Medicare and Medicare-Medicaid dual plans. What you pay for COVID-19 testing visits depends on your plan’s copay and deductible, and on whether tests are ordered. See insurance accepted or call (281) 617-8671 to verify your coverage before your visit.

How fast are results?

Rapid antigen results are ready during the visit, in about 15 minutes. PCR results come from a laboratory and usually take a few days.

Does the test hurt?

A nasal swab is briefly uncomfortable but not painful.

Can I be tested for flu and strep at the same time?

Yes. When symptoms overlap, your provider can test for flu and strep throat during the same visit.

Is there treatment for COVID-19?

Adults at higher risk of severe illness may be offered antiviral medicine, which works best when started early. Everyone benefits from rest, fluids and fever control. Your provider will explain what fits you.

Is testing covered by insurance?

Coverage for COVID-19 testing depends on your plan and the reason for testing. Call with your card ready and the front desk will check your benefits.

Are you accepting new patients?
