Getting through it at home, and when not to
Rest, fluids and acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and aches are the foundation. Expect a cold to last about a week and the flu or COVID-19 one to two weeks, with cough and tiredness lingering longest. Stay home while you have a fever, and wash hands and ventilate rooms to protect others.

- Asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or a weakened immune system
- Anyone whose symptoms are severe or getting worse after day 3
Preventing the next one
A flu vaccine every season and COVID-19 vaccination as currently recommended lower the chance of severe illness. Pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for adults 50 and older and for younger adults with certain conditions. Ask at your visit.

Yes if the fever is high, lasts more than 2 to 3 days, comes with breathing trouble, severe sore throat or ear pain, or if you are over 65 or have a chronic condition. Call ahead so we can seat you apart.
Can you test for flu and COVID-19 at the same visit?
Yes. Rapid tests for flu, COVID-19 and strep are done during the visit when they will change your treatment.
Is there medicine for the flu?
Antiviral medicines shorten the flu and reduce complications when started within 48 hours of symptoms, especially for higher-risk adults. Your provider will decide whether they fit you.
Do I need antibiotics?
Not for a cold, flu or COVID-19, which are viral. Antibiotics are used only when a bacterial infection such as strep, pneumonia or a bacterial sinus infection is found.
How long am I contagious?
Flu and COVID-19 are most contagious in the first few days. Stay home until you have been fever-free for 24 hours without medicine and your symptoms are improving.
Can I get a work note?
Yes. Ask at check-in and it will be ready before you leave.
