Feeling better while your body does the work
Most sore throats and sinus infections are viral and resolve within a week to ten days. Antibiotics do not shorten them and can cause side effects. What helps: fluids, rest, honey or lozenges for throat pain, saline rinses and a nasal steroid spray for sinus pressure, and acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and aches.

- Sinus symptoms lasting more than 10 days, or getting worse after getting better
- A cough lasting more than 3 weeks, or any cough with blood or shortness of breath
- Ear pain with fever, drainage or hearing change
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing, drooling or a muffled voice: go to the ER
Lingering cough
A cough that stays after a cold is usually postnasal drip, airway irritation or reflux, and clears with the right treatment. Cough with wheeze or night-time waking may be asthma. Smokers with a new or changed cough need an exam and sometimes a chest X-ray.
