Getting through a stomach bug
Small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solution, broth or diluted juice work better than large amounts at once. Once vomiting settles, start bland foods such as rice, toast, bananas and crackers, then return to a normal diet as you can. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and very fatty or sugary foods for a few days. Wash hands well to protect your household.
Signs of dehydration
- Very dark urine or no urine for 8 hours
- Dizziness when standing, racing heart
- Dry mouth, no tears, sunken eyes
- Confusion or extreme weakness
Return or go to the ER if
- Blood in vomit or stool, or black stools
- Severe pain, especially lower right abdomen, or a hard, tender belly
- Vomiting for more than 24 hours or inability to keep any fluids down
- Fever over 102°F, or diarrhea lasting more than 3 days
- Recent antibiotics with severe diarrhea (possible C. difficile)

Yes. Walk in Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. If you have severe pain, blood in vomit or stool, or cannot keep fluids down, go to the ER.
Do you give IV fluids?
We assess dehydration and treat nausea so you can drink. Patients who need IV fluids are referred to urgent care or the ER.
Will I need antibiotics for diarrhea?
Usually not. Most cases are viral. Antibiotics are used for specific bacterial infections identified by history or stool testing.
Can I take over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medicine?
For mild diarrhea without fever or blood, loperamide can help. Avoid it with high fever or bloody stools; ask your provider.
When should stomach pain worry me?
Severe pain, pain that localizes to one spot (especially the lower right), a rigid belly, fever, or blood in vomit or stool all need prompt evaluation, usually in the ER.
