A minor infection is one that is localized and not yet affecting your whole body: a reddened, warm patch of skin, an infected scratch or insect bite, a painful ear, a bladder infection, pink eye. Caring for a healing infection at home
Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed and finish the course even when you feel better. Keep wounds clean and covered, elevate a swollen limb, and mark the edge of any redness with a pen so you can tell if it is spreading. Most infections improve within 48 to 72 hours of the right treatment; if yours does not, call.
Signs an infection is getting worse
- Redness spreading beyond the line you marked, or red streaks moving toward the body
- Fever, chills or feeling generally unwell
- Increasing pain, swelling or pus
- Numbness, dark skin or blisters over the area
- Infection on the face, near the eye, or in someone with diabetes or a weak immune system
Preventing skin infections
- Wash cuts and scrapes with soap and water and cover them
- Do not pick at insect bites or squeeze boils
- Keep skin moisturized if it cracks, and treat athlete’s foot, which lets bacteria in
- Control blood sugar if you have diabetes

Yes. Walk in Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. If the redness is spreading fast, you have a high fever, or the infection is near your eye, go to the ER.
Do all infections need antibiotics?
No. Viral and fungal infections do not respond to antibiotics. Your provider treats the actual cause, which sometimes means no antibiotic at all.
Can you drain a boil or abscess?
Small abscesses can often be drained in the office. Larger or deep ones are referred for drainage.
How do I know if a cut is infected?
Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain or pus after the first day or two, or red streaks, fever or a wound that will not heal.
Is MRSA treated differently?
Yes. MRSA needs specific antibiotics; a culture tells us whether it is present. Keep wounds covered and wash hands to avoid spreading it.
